FAQ

Never been to therapy? Don't know what to expect? You may be asking some of the questions below.

Feel free to contact me with any other questions you may have.

Will my health insurance cover therapy?

Most health plans will cover a certain amount of the cost of therapy with a social worker, psychologist or psychotherapist. Check with your provider for the details of your plan.

How long does the process take?

There is no set number or frequency of sessions. We would meet for as many or as few sessions as you like. We would meet for as long as you find therapy helpful.

How do I arrange an appointment?

You can schedule an appointment by using the email or phone number below, or by clicking here.

What can I expect if I have never been to therapy?

Although it can be intimidating to make that first call, therapy is not scary. It is a confidential, non-judgmental space where you can be honest about the things that are bothering you, and to receive tools and strategies to deal with those things.

What area do you serve?

I can see clients virtually from all over Ontario. I have office space for in-person sessions in downtown Ottawa, and in Cornwall. If you live in Quebec, I can still see you in-person at one of those offices.

Can I do therapy virtually?

Absolutely! Lots of people love the convenience of online therapy. I offer daytime or evening virtual sessions, and I also offer in-person daytime sessions at clinics in Ottawa and Cornwall.

What is your treatment approach?

I gravitate towards Narrative Therapy, but I also incorporate elements of Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. My approach is flexible, and based on your goals and needs.

How much do you charge?

My rate for individuals is $175/hour for individuals, and $205/hour for couples therapy. In special circumstances, a reduced rate can be negotiated. Please contact me for corporate rates and speaking engagements.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is required. You can contact me, or self-refer through the clinic I serve, Intersections Therapy Collective in Ottawa. You can book a session here.

What can I expect at the first session?

Our first session is what is called an Intake. I would ask questions about your background, what has brought you to therapy, and what your goals are for therapy.

What is the goal of therapy?

You set your own in collaboration with your therapist. These are your sessions, and you get to chose what you want to work on and what you don't. Your therapist can provide direction, but the goal is to address the issues that are causing you the most concern.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, psychotherapist and coach?

There are some key differences between the different categories of therapists. All can provide you with support, but with different emphases:
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health. Psychiatrists are the only mental health professionals who can prescribe and adjust medications, and they rarely provide therapy services.
Psychologists are specialists in the study of mind and behaviour. Psychologists and psychiatrists are qualified to administer standardized tests and to diagnose mental health disorders. Psychologists often also provide therapy services, although some are dedicated exclusively to assessment and diagnosis.
Social workers provide therapy services to assist with a number of mental health concerns. Some are general practitioners while others specialize in certain issues like substance abuse, depression, etc.
A lifecoach is not a therapist, but can provide you with useful support regarding your career, goals, lifestyle, etc.
